That *could* be an intriguing pick. Definitely knows college ball, and if he could take some of Alabama's recruiters with him, USC would be in business right away. But Kirb's an SEC guy. A southern boy. My guess is that Kirb's got his eyes on Florida. That program would be back in business right quick.

That being said, I think Orgeron has done an outstanding job, and he also has recruiting experience, in addition to being the coach himself. The players like him, and he wins. Might not be bad to keep him there for another year or two to see what happens.

Like in Muschamps case, I think its good if a coach cuts his teeth at a smaller/lower profile school before going to a high profile job like USC (or Florida). Its a different gig being the head coach rather than an assistant (where really most of the coaching is done).

Meh, not necessary.

Bob Stoops was an assistant under Bill Snyder and later Steve Spurrier. Jimbo Fisher was a Saban assistant at LSU before moving on to Florida State a few years ago. I'd say he's done about as well as anyone can do cutting his teeth at a major program. Fast forward to now, the stars are lining up for Kirby Smart to be the next Saban assistant to grow a branch on the Saban coaching tree.

"I'm not going to be the Alabama coach." Nick Saban, 2007.

Wow... Surprising. I'm with you on they could have done better.

There's no reason to worry about USC getting back on top of college football now.

Half of the SC alums are loving this hire, half are on suicide watch tonight. Ol' 7 win Sark does not worry me in the least.
