CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — In the summer of 2011, 19 undergraduates at the University of North Carolina signed up for a lecture course called AFAM 280: Blacks in North Carolina. The professor was Julius Nyang’oro, an internationally respected scholar and longtime chairman of the African and Afro-American studies department.
The former professor Julius Nyang’oro has been indicted.
It is doubtful the students learned much about blacks, North Carolina or anything else, though they received grades for papers they supposedly turned in and Mr. Nyang’oro, the instructor, was paid $12,000. University and law-enforcement officials say AFAM 280 never met. One of dozens of courses in the department that officials say were taught incompletely or not at all, AFAM 280 is the focus of a criminal indictment against Mr. Nyang’oro that was issued last month.
LOL...this article only barely even TOUCHES the depth of the issues surrounding the basketball and football programs at UNC. Literally, things have been popping up in addition nearly monthly in Chapel Hill with the latest being a graduate assistant, who was kicked off the basketball team by Roy Williams, arrested in one of Williams homes on drug charges and saying he was "renting" this $500k house from Roy. haha That was in the last few weeks.
This is what happens when higher education cares more about athletics than education. I'd bet this is a wide spread problem and if all books were opened, school after school after school would be found to be doing the same or other shady things.
Is this something new? It sounds like the exact same story that was in the news like 2 years ago...and UNC lost scholarships and was unable to play in a bowl last year. I guess the real story here is that the professor was just recently indicted, but the university has already been penalized and it's pretty old news at this point.
