then, IMO, you shouldn't even be invited to a bowl game at all.
Some of the lesser known games are complete jokes, like the one in Boise, ID or one outdoors in NYC in late December (wasn't there over a foot of snow for that one 2 years ago)? If they are so desperate to have one that they will invite a Pac12, Big 10 or SEC program with a 6 and 6 record, just to fill butts, then you should not even have the game, you think?
Back in the 80's being in a Bowl game really meant something. Now, I've heard that at least 40% of the BCS programs make one? Really?
They can have the lesser ones, be playoff games, similar to the way they do it in the FCS division, even if it's just 8 teams. If they really need this many Bowl games, which the NCAA doesn't.
Only exception I would make is if all the program's losses, where against teams that had a national ranking at the time, the actual game was played.
Yes, means you agree with no Bowl games, for .500 teams.

this is one of the reasons the ncaa set the standard at a team having six wins before becoming bowl eligible. some of the smaller bowls would have teams with losing records, while teams that had the .500 or better records stayed home.
but i do agree that there are too many bowl games these days, heck we have a new bowl game here in tucson, again, this time around sponsored by nova home loans.
i think the problem came when the old standard bowls started having financial problems, and went to corporate sponsorship for the bowl games. once that happened, corporations across the country wanted to get in on the act, and sponsor their own bowl game.
still however the gold standard is a BCS bowl, while the platinum standard is the playoffs.

I realize that, but when teams started to schedule 12 games, mainly the extra game is one where they beat up on some FCS team, that wiped that good intent out the window.
Toilet bowl! Very disapointed that my team, cornhuskers 5-7, accepted a bowl game... total shame.
It means some extra money but best of all bowl teams get some extra practices. That could make a big difference in next year's team.
