I'm a Clemson grad as well- if it weren't for how far we got with Gary to still lose out, this would have felt like a grand strand with the Mullen & Simpson signing day commits. Not all the players are the flashiest names/credentials but we plugged all the holes. That was a huge accomplishment since no one knew how decimated our defense would be until mid January. Dabo called out Powell as a freak of a player in the press conference & seeing how he showed up everyone (including Feaster) in the Shrine Bowl I really think he will be our breakout star in the next two years.
OU did much better than it's final ranking (#19-20 on 247 Network) would indicate. Third behind Tejas and just below Baylor.
First, OU only graduated something like 11 seniors last year, so that meant a smaller signing class no matter what. OU signed 19 guys + transfers Kyler Murray (five star coming out of high school) and proven/battle tested Geno Lewis from the Nittany Lions. The additions of Murray/Lewis do not show up in recruiting rankings obviously skewing the numbers. Many other schools ranking higher or in the similar range as OU signed as many as 25 guys or more. If OU signs just a few more recruits it would have ended up somewhere in the 10-15 range nationally being second to only Tejas' class in the the Big XII conference.
Plus, OU signed the Big XII's only five star recruit in Caleb Kelly from out West, California I believe.
Overall it was a decent recruiting class for OU. The most important thing for OU is that they have a little ol' QB named Baker Mayfield coming back. If Baker stays healthy OU will be fine. Elite QB play is what separates about 90% of the schools in the Power 5 Conferences. Case in point, Tejas will still stink (fingers crossed!) unless it gets solid QB play.
^noticed on another site that OU loaded up on OL's. Smart. I've seen fans imply that QB's and RB's make plays by themselves, but the best offensive skill players in history get drilled if the line doesn't hold up. I know that I'm preaching to the choir, but saw some of that on the NFL board a few years back.
On the other hand, against Tech's D...
