I submitted this idea to the guys at the BCS. I know they won't look at it but it was worth a shot. It's a tournament system where the top two teams in each conference, the #1 independant, and the remaining top 5 of the top 25 who aren't in already would play in a 5 round (known as Luck Teams), 28 team playoff for the national championship, BCS spots, and other bowl spots. This would begin the week of the confrence championship games. The loser of any game (except the Sun Belt since they can only play in one bowl game) would go to a certian bowl game. In the 3rd/4th rounds, the losers of those games would play each other in one of the 3 BCS games. The last round would be the National championship. The #1 and #2 team's conference would play on opposite sides of the bracket and get the second round off. If the top two are in the same conference, the #3 school would count as the #2 in the nation. Home field depends on the ranking. If they have a higher ranking than their opponent, they get home feild advantage. The "big conferences" would always play the smaller ones. Here's an example of what the 1st round would look like this year:

#1----#2
Big 10 #1/2----SEC E/W

Big East 1/2----Pac 10 #1/2
SunBelt 1/2----WAC #1/2

Luck team#5----LT#4
Luck team#3----LT#2

Luck team#1----C-USA #1E
Independant#1----C-USA #1W

ACC #1/2----Big XII N/S
MWC #1/2----MAC E/W

Second Round
Ohio State and Florida would get a BYE. Louisville would play the Sun Belt team. LSU/Notre Dame would play Auburn/Rutgers. ACC winner plays Mt. West winner...you get the idea.

I know everyone won't like this, and this isn't perfect, but I believe that this is a lot better than the BCS! What do you think? Honestly.

My college football playoff proposal is on my blog (link below), with the basic presumption being that, realistically, BCS schools would rather secede from the NCAA than go to an NCAA Tournament-style playoff, so the best compromise is to use the BCS bowls to create a 3-week playoff while also keeping the traditional matchups (i.e. Big Ten vs. Pac-10 for the Rose Bowl):

Let me know what you think!

That's a good idea, too, Frank. We both agree on the fact that the season wouldn't be longer, and the smaller conferences would get an equal chance.

I didn't really think about keeping the 4 BCS bowls traditional, but I believe that something's gotta give.

I want to change something in my playoff system, though.

Have 10 of the bowl games (including the BCS bowls) be associated with the tournament. That way, the teams that lose would play eachother in those games instead of finding an open spot.
Also, the Sun Belt could also have a #2 play in one of the bowls.

This won't be happening anytime soon, but one can dream....

Both of you have great ideas AND they make sense, which is why the brainsurgeons in charge won't even consider either.
