I realize that this will never happen, but my idea would be to reduce the FBS down to 96 teams, with 8 regional conferences, consisting of 12 teams per conference. Then have a playoff with all 8 conference champions. When you factor in the conference championship games, it would basically be a 16 team playoff. Every team in the nation would have a pathway to make the playoffs.

An all-mountain time zone conference sounds appealing due to the beauty of the region but unfortunately in reality, it would be a colossal failure all to itself. The talent among those states is nowhere near as plentiful as that as the Southeast, California, Texas, Midwest etc. Maybe that conference gets a swing 5-star recruit or two out of California or Texas but that's not going to be enough to keep up with everyone else.
Colorado State and New Mexico could be potential Pac/Big 12 members, but I don't see any major expansion/reshuffling conference changes anytime soon.
