I can understand your frustration. The Gophers are FINALLY building a real good program where the top local talent actually wants to stay and not go elsewhere. This will be a major blow to the North Dakota State recruiting as they used to hit the Minnesota market big BECAUSE of how inept the U. of Minnesota was.
The Big Ten has already cancelled all their non-league games. South Dakota State was to get a cool half million $ for playing Nebraska the first game of the year. That was money I'm sure they were counting on. They came within a couple plays of beating the Huskers the last time they played.
If the football season is cancelled, look for a lot of other sports programs being eliminated at colleges as football was the big revenue producer to keep the other sports afloat.
It may be a real bloodbath at institutions across the country.
I'm guessing that as many as half the programs won't survive. Football is already a money loser for a large percentage of programs--and that's with revenue. I can't imagine how many will pull the plug if they are hemorrhaging money without ticket sales or TV revenue.

I agree I suppose. But how is a school hemorrhaging money if they are not playing sports at all? It seems to me they need the football revenue to pay for other sports programs at the school. Pulling the plug on football just basically ends all the other sports programs at these schools.
Well, they've got to pay scholarships, they've still got bond debt on the stadium to service, they've got to pay off contracts (or maintain salaries) of the higher-paid staff (head coaches, etc.), they've got to come up with some kind of severance for lower-paid university employees, they may need to buy concessionaires out of their contracts, and I can't even imagine all the other fixed costs that could be involved in setting up a Division 1 football program.

Yup. Football is an incredibly expensive sport, with a ton of personnel. Just because you're not playing doesn't mean you don't have a lot of overhead.
For example, Alabama's football expenses in 2018 were around $62.2 million. Of that number, Nick Saban and his coaching staff were paid $16.36 Million in 2019. That doesn't count secretaries, PR hacks, groundskeepers, and everything else under the sun. So before you fertilize the first blade of grass, pay the first person in the ticket office, you name it, you're already in the hole for a huge amount of money. Do you think Saban is going to lay off his staff?

Being a hard core football fan, so I am told, I look forward to the weeknights of watching those MAC games on Wednesday night while I am up late finishing my work from the day. I would miss that. I felt a sense of sadness when the final bowl game ended between Louisiana and Miami in the Lending tree Bowl...thinking that I have to wait until September to see another game....
You have to keep in mind, these kids are not getting financial compensation for playing these games (yeah yeah, insert joke about 'student'-athletes here). There's a huge lawsuit waiting to be filed the minute one of them gets sick, and of course they will have spread it like wildfire amongst the other athletes, the athletes families, the coaches/coaches families, and on and on.
I think they'd be fools to risk this. It may upset some, but the health and safety of these kids has to take priority. They're already playing a dangerous game, no need to risk them and others to Covid.
That being the case, there are several SEC colleges that will have no reason to exist.
There is talk of Alabama playing Notre Dame in September - lol. Kelly and many other coaches from the Big 10, SEC, Big-12, Pac 12, and ACC don't want the season to be eliminated. There are also smaller programs that depend heavily on the paycut for playing those lopsided games (e.g. New Mexico State against Florida).
Even if the season as a whole is cancelled, they should let Kelly schedule a game with Alabama or LSU on an isolated island or stadium with a safe "bubble" quarantine like the NBA or UFC does just to see Kelly get humiliated again - lol.
