My daughter is currently in her junior year of High school on Long Island New York. She would like to go to a college which offers a 5 yr degree program which upon graduation leaves her with a M.S. in Special Ed. Does anyone know of any schools located within a 400 mile radius of NYC that offers such a program? Than you for time

I believe Rutgers has the 5-yr SpEd master's program:

Special Education (K

Also Temple:

SpEd is one of the most marketable fields in education, so she's making a wise choice in my humble opinion if she wants to teach.

Google "5 year masters in special education" - there are a number of programs in your immediate area.

Good luck!

Encourage your daughter to spend some time lurking on this forum before she invests that much time and money into an education degree.

Won't all the SUNY and CUNY have what you need? Privates? Hartwick College Hartwick-Special Education: Dual Certification in Oneonta NY is very nice as is Marist in Poughkeepsie. Teacher Education Department: Marist College

Hartwick gives generous financial aid.

Yeah - seems like there would be plenty of schools in NY in a wide variety of areas .... if she is fine with living in the NE and wants to work in NY then going to a NY school would make the most sense as far as keeping costs low (remember that teachers generally make what they will make regardless of how much the degree costs) and networking high

If I was going into education out of HS I doubt I would of left the state .... I know Albany has a fairly good teaching program ... do they offer anything that combines the undergraduate/graduate?

Make sure that she wants this field; special ed is notorious for having a very short shelf-life, as the burnout factor is quite strong..

Check out the University of Connecticut. Most of their education degrees are 5 years with a master's at the end.
