How does a business verify degree from a foreign University? (doctors, degrees)

I have a friend (citizen) who is originally from Guatemala. She wants to lie about University graduation from a Guatemalan University on her resume. Does a business usually check these?
In todays digital age, a diploma is only a start. it is too easy to fake diplomas. heck you can go online and order a diploma for just about any field from a foreign university, for about $100

For a cashier job at Sears no one will know or care. Anything that pays decent and requires a degree will most likely verify it with the university, even if they ask to see the diploma. Normally such a lie is grounds for immediate termination even if they don't find out for years.
My wife is from Chile and graduated from the University of Chile medical school. When she was applying to medical residency programs here in the US you had better believe they meticulously checked her academic records, requested certified transcripts that had to be translated to English by a certified translator and I think she had to get a letter of recommendation from the dean of her medical school sent on the school's letterhead. It was all exceedingly time consuming and complicated. And, of course extremely necessary. How many of you would want foreign "doctors" practicing medicine in the US who were not actual doctors?
But of course if you are looking for a job at Wal-Mart or McDonalds it's not likely to ever be checked.
If the fake degree is part of the job requirement or job description then your friend would be insane to lie as that is likely to catch up with her. It is not hard to verify these sorts of things and large employers have human resource departments who's job it is to check this sort of thing. All the universities in Guatemala are going to have web sites and a registrar's office who's job it is to verify grades and degrees. It will be trivially easy for any employer to verify.
If she does lie on her resume and get caught and her employer decides to fire her and prosecute her for fraud then she will have to answer "yes" to the question that will be on every subsequent job application "have you ever been arrested or convicted of a crime?" and she will basically be sabotaged for life.

It depends on the type of business. If it is not the type of business that will check that, then no. But if they conduct background checks and education verifications, they will most likely check to see if she really has an education. There are agencies and services that exist for the purpose of verifying such information. There is even verification of credits for the purpose of transferring to a college or pursuing another degree in the US. If there was no way of checking, anyone could claim they have the equivalent of x+ credits from a foreign university and only need to take x credits to graduate from a school here in the US.
Verifying a degree from Guatemala will be no different than checking a degree from here in the US. After all, it's not like they don't have phones or internet in Guatemala. There was just a thread on the work & employment forum from someone who lied about their degree and an employer offered them a job contingent upon her producing a copy of their degree.
Of course there's also the problem of faking the knowledge that is gained when one earns a degree.
