There's a lot more to pharmacy than just 'counting pills'. It requires a lot of knowledge about chemistry and other sciences. You also hold a lot of liability, as one mistake can easily cause the death of a patient. I'm not a pharmacist, but am studying the healthcare fields in school. Pharmacists are more than just the guys/girls you see at CVS, Walgreens, etc. They work in a lot of environments.

I understand that they have to learn a lot, but most of what they actually do is just counting pills and doing brief patient consultations, which is why they feel unfulfilled (I'm guessing that ..... I think my friend wanted to go into research because of his disappointment).
I know many that I went to school with and interacted with many during an internship. Generally they did it for the money and while you have to know a lot the job was not very challenging to them. Lot of smart people who weren't challenged day to day.
Hospital pharmacists seem to enjoy their jobs, while retail pharmacists tend to treat their jobs as a means to an end. In the hospital, pharmacists have a lot of responsibility such as keeping a lookout for drug interactions that MD's are not as well-trained to spot.
