Any colleges in your state that it seems like everybody just wants to go to and it's really not all that it's hyped up to be... and some colleges that don't get good recognition like they should... What are the Overrated and Underrated colleges in the state you live in or just colleges you know in general???
In Florida, the general perception is basically that the University of Florida and Florida State are the "big two", and then everyone else in terms of state schools. I see that as an "overrated scenario" as there are other state schools worthy of attention that get snubbed/overlooked because of the common misconception that only UF/FSU are quality schools. Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University, University of South Florida and the University of Central Florida are all major universities with quality curriculum. The University of Miami is a private school that gets overlooked because of it's athletics reputation, but is and has been a quality school for many years.
I think SMU is a good school that people think is great. I think Texas A&M is a great school that people think is good. Though the Aggies that I know are kind of odd people that doesn't mean the school isn't really good.

If anything, UM is nationally recognized because of their athletic program. The Hurricanes are considered a powerhouse in college football, and also in baseball and basketball. Yes, there has been controversy, and there is an investigation now going on because of illegal dealings, but still, the Hurricanes are one of the most recognized brands in college athletics.
Moreover, UM, unlike UF and FSU, is also nationally recognized for their academic excellence as it relates to business and international business programs. The law school and the medicine school are highly regarded as well, nationally. UF and FSU are popular state wide.
Schools that are very underrated in Florida:
Florida Institute of Technology - Perfect school for working professionals in the engineering field.
University of North Florida - Also good engineering programs.
Overrated?:
Embry Riddle!!! The University of Phoenix of aeronautics!

Powerhouse? It's not the 1990's anymore. Miami's overall athletic program is pretty average. Miami has always been terrible at basketball.

Perception in Florida is UF and Miami as the top two schools. Miami is ranked a little higher but UF is the only AAU institution in Florida. New college also has a good reputation.
USF and UCF are getting better but that is about it.
The most overrated college in my area is without a doubt New York University (NYU). Vastly, insanely overpriced but they have an excellent brand. They act like they are Ivy League -- but aren't.
Under-rated would be the community colleges. They often employ the exact same faculty that NYU and Columbia have.
