Usually about $90-100 a semester, but I paid for them myself, as well as the rest of my schooling. This was before there was such a thing as "the internet" though.
I found with my kids that the cost of books varies widely depending on ones major. We have NEVER bought new books unless they just weren't available used. Even the bookstores sell them used. My humanity major kids were pretty cheap and usually not more then $100 a semester. My techy son, however, can pay $100 for a used book. He's only bought a years worth of books and cost for that was about $300/semester. I suggested that he make friends with a sophomore in his major

The kids on DS's dorm floor swapped books with each other, mainly for core classes they were taking. He got off with spending $30 second semester on books as a result. It was great. I agree, even if you buy used from an upperclassman, you will both come out ahead because you get a gently used book for 1/2 price and he gets more than double what he would have gotten from the bookstore if they bought back his books.
100-150$ per book new. Maybe about half that if buy used from amazon.
