I really thought that things had changed after nearly 30 years after graduating from University. At dinner last night, my brother-in-law said that my niece was 1 of 2 Mex-Americans in her Texas sorority at a major campus. They also have 1 half black/white sister and are considered to be the MOST DIVERSE on the campus!! It doesn’t really reflect what I see in my daily life at all. I am a native Texan and know about racist frat and sorority antics that I experienced firsthand in the 80s. It is shocking to me that little progress has been made. Is this what others still see among campuses these days?

Not a Social Greek Life member, but I'd be curious as to if Greek Life at individual schools represent their overall student demographics? Would there be any credibility to the notion that Greek Life is trying to recruit people of a different racial / ethnic background but to no or little success??

As an undergrad at a state school in the midwest that was 75% white with a Greek Life system that was probably 99% white I can say as a white person just because the organizations were like me provided no motivation to join one. I did however join an academic greek life organization for education majors that was easily 90% female. That was sort of motivating :-).

IMO you'd really have to know how many "100% American" girls, white girls, black girls, half white/black girls, "Mex-American" girls, "Indian-American" girls, "Asian-American" girls, etc., even went through rush at that college before automatically assuming "racism" in your niece's sorority.

Also, depending on when rush/pledging is allowed, you have to have a certain GPA in order to do so. At my college you had to be a second semester freshman (it's now a first semester sophomore) and the GPA necessary was no less than a 3.0.

In colleges that don't allow rushing or pledging until sophomore year? After settling in, making friends, they're good to go & don't feel the need to join a social club.

One has to pay dues if one joins a sorority or a fraternity. Given the cost of college these days? Might be cost-prohibitive for many.

I would hope any adult's daily life doesn't reflect what goes on at any college campus.

From what I remember the kids who make it to the end of rush and & were given bids (multiple) were usually friendly with an active sister/brother beforehand. Or were legacies.

I'd like to know what percent of people in Greek sororities/fraternities are non-white. But I don't think there are any real statistics on that. But it's obvious from looking at pictures that there is maybe one non-white member in each group, if even that. It is patently obvious that they practice racial discrimination.

You'd probably first like to know what percent of non-whites even rushed.

There is no "patently obvious" racism unless you are referring to black sororities and fraternities.

See any White/Asian/"Mex-Americans" in their composite pics?

Aren't fraternities and sororities by definition exclusionary? Only the financially well off can afford them. And if you're a minority of some sort, and the fraternity or sorority doesn't want you, woud you really want to associate with them?

By your logic, you’d have to know how many White girls rushed to get into a black sorority. Given the racial dynamics of this country and racial mating, I wouldn’t think that there would be too many.

Why is everyone ****ing racist these days? What is with this quota bull****? Yes, sororities and frats are exclusionary, but are there always people of other races seeking admission? Is is really being racist? That word is thrown around way too much.

Let's face it; they're a throwback to a bygone era, a dinosaur.
