Sure many students in large American Universities sit in huge lecture halls for some entry level classes but I understand in Europe pretty much every class is in a huge lecture hall and the Professors are especially aloof. (Almost regal)

It sounds like he needs to put on his big boy underwear and adjust to a different learning/teaching style.

Both points are right on. I also agree very much with Katiana about the perspective he can gain from this.
I'll add that it's only one semester, and if he can't get himself to delve into the subject matter and maybe find it interesting after all, as West Seattle Gal suggests, at least by toughing out this one semester he can learn a good lesson for life. In the future he's guaranteed to encounter plenty more situations where he has to get a job done even though he doesn't especially enjoy doing it. Okay, so maybe I sound like a bit of an old fogy with that one, but there really can be some benefit in learning how to tough it through when you don't especially enjoy a situation.
I just got off the phone with my nephew who is in Europe taking classes in his semester abroad.
He LOVES being overseas and experiencing the interesting lifestyle and traveling on weekends and doing day trips to scenic and historical places. But so far he hates the classes.
He usually goes to a small liberal arts private college in America with an average class size of 10-15 students. But at his classes in Europe- for this Semester Abroad- he is sitting in huge lecture halls with aloof professors who have no interaction with the students throwing out all kinds of boring theory. He says his whole grade is based on a paper and a final exam and if he fails one part of the class he fails the entire class.
He never realized how lucky he was going to classes at his small liberal arts college in America.
I think that this is the very normal venting that all of us do. It doesn't mean the OP's nephew expects anyone to take any action, he was simply complaining. My son (same age as the OP's nephew) told me that he had a hard time sleeping in his new dorm room because he had a different schedule than his roommates. He had morning classes and none of them did so wanted to go to bed before midnight. He wasn't telling me that so I could offer solutions (although I did send him a pair of ear plugs we had), he was just venting to Mom. That was the first week, in his more recent phone calls he hasn't mentioned problems with sleeping, so I'm guessing he figured something out. I'd be tickled if it was the ear plugs but more likely he just got used to their noise, or he's just existing on less sleep.
If we tried to solve every problem that we hear from people instead of just recognizing it as venting, we would be very angst ridden people. What's that saying?..... Don't sweat the little stuff and realize that it's all little stuff.
