No idea. They have great mathematicians and great programs in aerospace though.

How are these ranked? Colorado School of Mines is seriously tied with TAMU? And ahead of Indiana and Utah?

That's why a country like Turkey has 4 schools in the top 200, as English is commonly spoken in the Turkey, STEM classes at their major universities are taught in English, and they attract a big English speaking foreign student base from places like Pakistan and Bangladesh where English is common.

It's research, it's like 60% of the score. Narrow focused Geology and Mining research is expensive to produce and in a lot of foreign countries it is mostly done in house by corporations, or reliant on other countries. I could see where Colorado School of Mines faculty research getting cited by a lot of other foreign academics and the quality and quantity of the geology and mining research at schools like Utah and Indiana isn't going to be that good. That would boost their scores. STEM research is much more likely to be cited by foreign schools than social sciences.

Actually, English-language bias notwithstanding, I've always thought that the Times rankings are much more realistic than most of these ridiculous lists. At least they use real empirical data to formulate their rankings. And, the rankings - particularly in the top 50 - acquit with my feelings about the state of the academic world.

I agree; they are a lot more credible than US News.

The methodology that they use doesn't look all that different from the methodology that US News uses.
