Here's a well-thought-out condemnation of the state of Higher Education today:

Higher Education Is Drowning in BS by Christian Smith, a professor of sociology at the University of Notre Dame.

https://www.chronicle.com/article/Hi...rowning/242195

It begins:

Quote:
I have had nearly enough ****. The manure has piled up so deep in the hallways, classrooms, and administration buildings of American higher education that I am not sure how much longer I can wade through it and retain my sanity and integrity.

...But calling out the BS is not about my personal experience, limits, or feelings. It
I don't agree in everything Smith wrote, but it is very much worth reading. Also, most of the comments posted at the end of the article are from academics -- it is insightful to read their responses.

His article is all loaded up with BS. No meat, just reciting the mantras. Funny, a BS article about BS in universities.

It isn't just higher education, it is EDUCATION in general. The PC police, and leftists have put more requirements for diversity, and multicultural education than the actual subject matter that kids need to learn. Heck, you can't even play dodge ball in Gym anymore, or play Tag at recess.

It's all education and it has been going on for decades. I needed very few things that I learned in high school and my 1st year of college in my life and that we 35 years ago. It was always BS....and we have the privilege of paying for it. How dumb are we

There are a number of well-considered points. I thought it was going to be some neocon rant about leftists and PC, but it isn't. It's actually a reflection on systemic issues like chipping away at the caliber of instructional staff, and dealing with a cultural **** that values higher ed as a job placement program versus institutions of learning.

While I partly agree and partly disagree, I wish he'd taken a few of his key points and fleshed them out with more details and reasons rather than just a list of BS items.

It's a pretty good article. I agree that it is not a conservative rant, although maybe one is called for. It could use some fleshing out but the Chronicle isn't going to publish a book-length article. Maybe he will write a much-needed book.

Higher education is not a life skills program.... You should be more concerned about why you feel it is...

I didn't know dodge ball and tag were useful skills in life. Unlike you, I give the writer credit for not turning it into another conservative vs liberal rant coming from an old crank pining for the good ol' days. It's pretty clear that you have not read the article.
