We paid off a student loan our son had 3 months ago. We sent a certified check. Now we can not even get them to send us a receipt in spite of several request. It was for over 25 k and I think we legally should be given a valid receipt, What can we do ?

Do you still receive payment stubs from them?

Is it marked online as paid for?

Did check clear and you bank has proof?
If yes, they can kiss your right foot. Sue them, if they keep bugging you.

The OP didn't say they are being bugged, only that they can't get a receipt that it is paid off.

Is that correct Mr78609?

If they are federal loans, you should be able to show your balance and that it is fully paid off. There is also a full history (ledger) for all of your payments. That and the account number is all you really need. Someone in customer service should be able to get you the proof.

That’s how I read it too.

I pay off all my grad/professional-school loans online (via direct deposit). It's great. It displays your current balance and keeps a log of all the payments you made. You get an e-receipt with every payment. So there's no worry about a "receipt."

Is it possible that your child, who actually took out the loan, received the receipt or proof that the loan was paid off?

You are correct. We were promised a receipt but never got it.

He says not so. He did say the account appeared to be paid but I think a real documented receipt should be sent to us...
