hello all,

I searched for a while but cannot find an answer... If a child withdraws from college in the middle of the first semester with all Ws for medical reasons.. and applies to a different college for the spring semester... Should the child apply as a first year or a transfer? How bad those Ws look for the new college?

thank you!

You can't apply as a transfer because you have no credits to transfer over!

It depends if the withdrawal was for a one time disease (like covid) or for an ongoing issue or a mental health issue. Whatever, those W's will look terrible.

I would apply as a Non-Matriculated student. Take a limited amount of courses (like 3 courses) for the first semester. After earning good grades, apply as a full time student.

Good luck!

mental health

you would think so, but I called one college and they said it would still be considered transfer

It is considered a transfer at the college you called, not all colleges. Colleges can define "transfer" however they want. Some institutions define a transfer as someone who started at another school, while others define it as someone who has earned credits at another school.

Is your child's mental health sufficient to go back to school? If it were me, my child would be a successful commuter student at a local college for one or two semesters before I considered sending them off again.

If you want any federal money you will have to resubmit Fafsa information.

The impact of the Ws will depend on how selective the college is and how they define what a transfer student is.
