CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A record 29,000 people have applied for a spot in next fall's freshman class at Harvard University.
Harvard's admissions office said Wednesday that the applications this year beat the nearly 27,500 people who applied last year. Each student is vying for one of just 1,700 spots.

I wish I had tried to get in before everyone and their dog found out about the free ride for broke folks. Some people still think you have to be a millionaire to go there.
Hindsight and all that...

There is way over 300 million people in this country now, the education system is just very unbalanced and out of control competitive (and were not just talking American students either).

I wonder how jacked up numbers are going to be for graduate admissions across the country this year.

you do have to wonder how many of those applicants are truly qualified though, or if a bunch of people applying in hopes of getting the free ride and forgetting that Harvard, even when "free" is still one of the most selective universities on Earth

Probably a good amount. Many, many qualified students just simply did not apply because they thought that they were not wealthy or privileged enough. Funny thing is that Harvard has had a policy of moving away from the upper white crust image for a long while now. The word finally got out.

That's a good observation. I imagine MBA admissions are slowly rising.
