I thought this was interesting to check out: Where Does Your Freshman Class Come From? - The Chronicle of Higher Education

No surprise that states that have very low in-state tuition keep those students right there!

It is very cool.

Is this really true, though? 31,000 people leave New Jersey to go out of state. 4,800 people from outside New Jersey attend school here. Jesus. That's pretty bad, especially when you subtract everyone attending Princeton.

My child had a full-ride in-state, but went six hours away to a university that provides the degree program of interest.

Many private colleges (even the non-elite) have a large amount of OOS students. Two of my kids went to private colleges that had a large regional OOS student population. New Jersey has very expensive public U's and it makes a lot of sense for them to just hop over a border or two and attend a Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware or Maryland public U.

Makes sense. Generally speaking most people attend in-state and then the next most popular option is to attend a state within a day's driving distance. The states with more of a higher ed industry in them - New York, Massachusetts, California - attract more than anyone else.

A few states bleed college freshmen... ie: Idaho, South Dakota, West Virginia, where there's neither much of a higher ed establishment and not much excitement or many jobs to entice people to stay.
