Without question the best is Penn State in State College,Pennsylvania.Do you consider that East Coast ? It is in the middle of the state. It's meteorology dept is so strong that it gave birth to and is still the home of Accuweather.

Another highly respected one is Plymouth State University in Plymouth,New Hampshire.

And they must have a meteorology dept at M.I.T.

MIT has the Atmospheres, Oceans, and Climate program that they offer for both undergrad and grad. Probably nothing you would want to take if your aim is to only be the nightly news weather person.

Undergrad program:
MIT EAPS: Education (http://eapsweb.mit.edu/education/undergrad/major/aoc.html - broken link)

Grad program:

My alma mater, SUNY Oneonta, has a meteorology program. So does, SUNY Oswego, where Al Roker went to college (but not for meteorology).

Best of luck to you!

Univ of Oklahoma has the largest meteorlogy program in the nation. It's an excellent place to study real-time weather, given it's the area of genesis for many tornadoes and severe weather activity. Highly respected program.
