I’ve been enlisted in the Air Force for 11 years and make a pretty decent living for somebody my age, especially in comparison to my peers and siblings who have degrees and a lot of debt. I have an Associates but I would like to complete a Bachelors sometimes in the next 9 years before I can retire. Education is free so I better take advantage of it. I know I can get a good job when I get out regardless, especially in DC area, but I realize that I’ll have more options with a 4 year degree.

Yes, in DC, a bachelor's is the bare minimum one needs to ever hope of owning a house.

Well if you don't particularly need a degree all that bad, then why not study what interests you the most? That's what I would do--English Lit here I come. Or, since you already have an associate's degree, then see which credits will transfer and what degree you're closest to getting.

The easiest degree is going to vary by person. The smartest thing to do would be to get a degree in something that you enjoy and/or that interests you. I know people who struggle in english lit, psychology, history, etc., but are absolute geniuses with math, physics, chemistry, etc. And, of course, there are those who struggle with math & sciences but have a gift for the arts. It depends upon the individual.

Well, what's your Associates in? What do you want to do?

What courses were easy for you, interesting? For me it was Physics -

What do you do professionally for the AF?

You could always elect to go to a 9 month or 1 year trade school if that is your thing. Especially if one works with some of the experience you already have. Of course this is not going to be a "degree" but it can assist in getting you that higher paying blue collar job.

My sister worked in a dental clinic for 8 years, then decided to go to a short 9-month program certifying her to be a dental hygienist. Combined with her work experience, certification and the short course, she landed a nice position paying her over $40K per year. Not bad for someone with no degree.

I have an Associates degree in Applied Science. I'm an Intelligence Analyst in the Air Force. Unfortunately things that interest me (sports, fitness) won't make me more money-- I need that 4 year degree.

I plan on doing something that I love around 55 years old, when money won't necessarily matter. My dream job would to coach sports to small kids.

I'm just planning on what I'll do when I retire from the Air Force in 9 years. Even though I'll have 20 years experience at the time, many Federal Agencies won't even look at you unless you have a Bachelors.

Gumbo, why don't you get a teaching degree for teaching phys ed then? Or get some other degree that most appeals to you, and coach kids on a volunteer basis? Heck, you could do that now--my BIL is out every afternoon after work coaching kids.

Gumbo. You could just stop asking what to do with your life and empty garbage cans in Louisiana...
