Would it make a difference if someone went for a post-bac certificate in order to meet requirements to sit for the CPA exam or would it be better to do the MS in accounting? keep in mind this person has a degree in communications and the whole goal is to sit for the CPA. thanks!

Default Cost Benefit

If this person has taken any finance/accounting classes, they understand a cost/benefit analysis. IMO, your friend should take the cheapest, fastest option if the ulitmate goal is a CPA. Employers are normally seeking either a CPA or an MBA. Normally, an MS isn't of much interest.

You would get a Masters if you have the 24 hours prerequisite accounting hours...You would get the Post-bacc if you have a bachelors in something else and don't meet the prerequisites. Either way you can sit for the CPA exam, because states usually require 150 credit hours and 24 hours in accounting. I'm pursuing a post-bacc myself
