I'm working on my general associates in community college and almost ready to transfer to a four year. I have sat back and tried to figure out what would be the right direction for me to take my life.

After weighing pros and cons and likes and dislikes and yes and nos. I have finally come to the conclusion I'd like to go into the hospitality field. An event coordinator at a major hotel or on a cruise ship, or somewhere along those lines.

Now that I know where I want to go. I now need to know the directions of how to get there! What colleges/universities are high on the rankings, lead to good jobs straight out of college and has the exact degree I need? I've done some research, but I seem to be walking in circles. Anything helps

I'd like to actually talk to someone who might be where I'd like to be.

I'm curious, what exactly would one learn in such a program?

Seems like the sorts of things that would make one good in the hospitality industry are the sorts of things that you have or don't have (i.e., personable, etc).

Exactly! I have been told time and time again that I have the personality and the people winning skills to be in that sort of mix. I am a people person who likes to help others, but not in a doctor kind of way. but like most things, no matter how great of a skill you have, you must have the degree to get anywhere with it

Hi. I knew someone in college majoring in Hotel and Restaurant management at my school: Hotel & Restaurant Management

She had a part-time job in a local hotel for a couple of semesters and did an internship at the alumni center, which had a restaurant and put on various events. I think she went to work for Marriott after she graduated.

Here are some other schools:

Kemmons Wilson School :: Welcome :: University of Memphis
Supposed to be a pretty good program. There is a newer hotel on campus, used by a lot of parents and business travelers, staffed by hospitality students.
This link might be useful in helping you decide Hospitality School Rankings (http://www.hospitalityschools.com/hospitality-school-rankings.html - broken link)

Hi,

I have an AAS in Hospitality Management and a BS in Marketing.
I worked in the industry after graduating for 14 years prior to staying home with my children.

I have to say, and it could be very different today (this was in the early 90's), I had to start at the "bottom" regardless. Although a degree is great to have, unfortunately, in the Hospitality Industry, it doesnt' always gtd. you a step right into Management or exaclty where you want to be. You may have to work your way around the hotel/cruise ship, prior to finding what it is that you really want to do.
I really thought I wanted to be in Sales, which is why I pursued my Marketing Degree. I ended up not really enjoying my sales position in the Hotel and LOVING my position as Front Office Manager.
I loved how busy we always were with being a part of the front of the house operations vs. the cold calls for sales and having to meet booking goals.
That is just me though, you have to find your niche. You can't do that if you aren't willing to start low and aim high.

The hospitality field is a lot of fun! it is different every day , which is also another thing that I loved about it. I loved meeting all the different people I met and learning what I did.
I did work for awhile as a meeting planner and did also enjoy that position, as there wasn't alot of cold call sales involved in it.
You need to be willing to be flexible, remember,it is a 24hr a day/7days a week/365 days a year job.Regardless of what you do.
Even as an event planner, someone may want to book a Family Xmas party in one of the banquet rooms for Xmas day,or Thanksgiving Day. It is rare, but it happens.
Managers in hotels put in many, many long and unpaid hours, it isn't known for it's pay, unless of course you work in NYC or a large city such as that... I made decent money, but I certainly wasn't wealthy
I am not trying to sway you at all, I absolutely loved working in the field, I am trying to "educate" you on the pros and cons.
Working with the public takes a "special" kind of person, and you have to be able to at least empathize, even if you don't agree....
I hope to go back someday when my children are in school full time, but it is the long hours that I hesitate with.
If you are lucky, you may find a job in the Sales offices that are more likely to be an office ,8am-5pm type job, but even so, we were required to participate in the Manager On Duty program which required working all day and evening (until 11pm) as the Manager in Charge.... I never minded doing it, but I didn't have children then either.

As far as schools; University of Las Vegas (UNLV) has a GREAT reputation for their program, Cornell University, Niagara University, Johnson & Whales and I am sure many others.
I do believe that RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology ) had a great program at one time, I am not sure if they are still offering it or not.

Good Luck to you, I think it is a great industry, especially if you enjoy working with people and you don't mind change everyday!

Wow NYMD! Thank you so much for all that information! I have been doing a lot of research on this (seeing as it is my future) and it sounds like its still the same as the 90's! I'm actually really excited to get started! I think I may have a plan slowly solidfying! its just the college I'm waiting for. and actually UNLV is top on my list of schools I'd like to attend. I have heard many great things about their hospitality promgram. Then I plan to start at the bottom of the ladder on a cruise ship and work my way up. My main goal is Cruise Director in maybe ten years! Thanks for the info though! It was really helpful

You are welcome! hope it works out for you

One of my teachers really pushed UNLV but it was too far from home for me It would have been a plane ride home all the time, but I hear it is a great program and where else could you get such good intern jobs but Las Vegas???

Good Luck to you

Default Conrad V. Hilton School: a no brainer!

In this corner of the world, the Gulf Coast, the Conrad Hilton School of Hotel Management and Hospitality, a college with the University of Houston main campus, is KING. It is right on the edge of the main campus so you can get a full BS , even Masters, is Hotel Management and other topics and, best of all, actually runs a large hotel and conference center used by visitors to UH in the 3rd Ward and the nearby central business district. So you get both a degree and real hands-on experience that will help you land your first job.

By the way, the Hilton connection is still alive in that Eric Hilton, son of the founder of the corporation and retired Vice-Chairman of the corp. himself, is now on the Board of Directors of the college.
