I was thinking of heading out there this weekend, but will there be many people there on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I ask because I will be going alone and I always think of mountain lions and other wild animals. So will I be safe?

Thanks!

There could be no one or could be several people - probably depends on how hot it is. Animals are possible - rattlers probably most likely. Take a big stick and just be alert.

You won't have any problems out there...it's awesome, but a very inexpensive handheld bottle of pepper-spray in the glovebox can really come in handy. Works on critters and people.

We went on Mother's Day and there were other people there. It was a gorgeous morning. So I would think that you would find some other people. Definitely bring lots of water! The white rocks reflect the light back at you and it gets quite hot.

Enjoy!

I would recommend trying to get there pretty early, as I concur that it can get quite hot there, by "Colorado standards".

Default Paint Mines Park: Hiking required?

My elderly parents are visiting me from back east. They saw some photos of the cool multi-colored rock formations in Paint Mines Park east of Colorado Springs and want to drive down and see them. Before we go all the way down there, I need to know if you can see any of the cool stuff from the car or from a parking area, or do you have to do any hiking to get to the good stuff? They are elderly and get winded climbing the stairs to my 2nd floor apartment, so a hike is out of the question, and I don't want to go all the way down there if they're not going to see what they wanted to.

I've not personally been, but based on what I've read online as well as looking at satellite maps, it looks like hiking is required to get close to the formations. The three parking areas appear to be a ways back from everything.

It looks like your best bet would be the West Overlook parking area in the bottom left of this map. It shows a .10 mile walk to an overlook viewing point. Based on a topo map of that area, there appears to be very little elevation change between that parking area and the overlook point.

Might be worth considering other areas, though.

I was there once about 4 years ago. Interloper is correct. Park near the west overlook, and walk .10 of a mile to the overlook. You won't see much from the road because the hoodoos sit in a bowl.

I've only ever used the south parking, and mucho walking was required. Never used the west lot and viewed from the overlook.

Thanks for the tip about the west overlook! It was exactly what I needed, a short walk and a great view.

(FYI, I didn't necro this, I started a new thread that someone decided to merge with a much older thread)
