When visiting my niece who was living in Cheyenne at the time, we did a road trip to Medicine Bow National Forest - (two not so great photos attached). I think it wasn't more than a few hours drive from Cheyenne. Some nice scenery though it was a stormy sort of day.

From there you could drop down into Colorado to Steamboat Springs with various options to head back up to WY from there. Just do a little Google-mapping.
