You're gonna love Colorado; decompressing from the rat race will feel awesome.

I came from the DC area and was here 3 months before hearing a horn blow in traffic.

Fresh air, lots of sunshine, few bugs, wide open spaces and more...

Congratulations!

I found this website:
Ways to be Licensed in Colorado

You will have to get an initial license, it appears and, since you have not taught professionally over in NYC, you'll have to also take the state tests.

Quote:
10. May I apply for a license if I have not met the testing requirements yet?

Yes, you may apply for licensure prior to passing the required PLACE or Praxis II exam if you are an out-of-state graduate. If you meet all other requirements for licensure, you may submit an application for an initial license and in turn receive an Interim Authorization, which is valid for one year and will allow you to teach while you also prepare for and take the relevant content exam. All Special Service Providers, however, must have passed their professional license exam completed prior to submitting an Initial License application.
So apply for your initial license now, and then sign up for the tests. Welcome to Colorado!

I will be coming out to visit and apartment search a little bit next month. Where would you suggest be the safest, best place for a single 25 yr old female to live for relatively low rent and near where there are fun things to do?

Also, wanted to know what type of car I'm going to need. Are the winters really bad that I'll need an SUV?

No. Best cars here are all-wheel drive or front wheel drive.

Winters are bad up in the high country, but we're on the far western edge of the prairie / plains.

Thanks for the info but I'm accepting a job as a special education teacher at Venetucci in WSD3 So excited to be leaving Long Island and live in some fresh mountain air! Now just focusing on the apartment hunt. I want to be in an area thats close to fun things to do (nightlife, shopping, but close to the mountains also). I would like the area to be relatively safe, but also not further than a 20 minute commute to the school. Any neighborhoods that I should steer clear of and reccommendations for neighborhoods to look at?

There are not a lot of apartments in Fountain/Widefield/Security. There are several that are close in Harrison School District just up the road, but most people would suggest you go just a bit farther. I would suggest you stay away from the central and eastern parts of Harrison District until you live here awhile and get to know the areas because there are a few places in there that might not be the best and if you don't know the area it can be hard to figure out as the differences can be subtle but significant. However, I used to live over by Quail Lake which is near the border of Harrison and Cheyenne Mountain School Districts and that was a very nice place to live and only about 10-15 minutes from where work and near plenty to do - near the World Arena, shopping, etc. Also, if you can find an apartment in the Broadmoor Bluffs area that is a VERY nice area and even closer to where you work.

beanie, start the application process immediately by having your fingerprints done & sending them in to CBI. CBI is notorious backlogged with applicants and it takes many months to get them through.

The entire Colorado teacher licensure must be done online, scanning in documents as attachments. It is a rather complicated process.

But it's the fingerprints that hold up the whole thing.

I am a retired teacher applying for substitute licensure & it is taking forever. Having a valid license from another state helps, so II was glad mine was not expired from Alaska.

You're going to love the area. I used to live in Manitou & loved it, working in Woodland Pk.
Congratulations!!! SpEd is a nice ticket! Hurray for you!

My local police department doesn't have fingerprint cards available. Would I obtain one from the CDE? I tried to call them and was on hold for a half hour before giving up. I was fingerprinted here in NY, is it possible for the CDE to obtain these fingerprints? It's so hard to contact both the NYS Dept of Edu. and the Colorado Dep of Edu. to get answers from them so any help anyone could give me would be great. I know the application process for certification takes a long time. Will I be able to be certified for the 2013-2014 school year? Would I be able to start my job with a pending certificate because I am certified in NY already?
