Good enough reason for me to build a 1.21 Gigawatt, 100ft tall fence at the border with border patrol towers at certain increments of the entire thing!

Most of the violent crime this year in COS has been of the domestic variety. The victim(s) knew the killer(s). There's not a lot of random, gang-type violence here. Statistically, COS has a lower crime rate than most cities its size. Don't be afraid to relocate here.

Kar54: you're so right. The double shooting here Monday was NOT by "immigrants" or "transients" - whatever THAT is supposed to mean in a nation of immigrants that is transient by nature and moves, on average, once every 7 years.

All cities, and all those stable, rural farm communities too, have ongoing drug problems with oxycontin and meth, and the crime that goes with them. This is one of the safest cities I know, and I recommend COL SPGS to anyone.

s/Mike

Smile Crime Information

Check out the crime maps located on the springs gov website (www dot springsgov dot com. Go to the Public Safety link on the left hand side, then choose the Colorado Springs Police Department link. Towards the middle of the page there is a link for weekly crime maps.)

Also you can read the Colorado Springs Police Department Blotter at Colorado Springs Police Department Blotter

If this link doesn't work go back to the springs gov website mention above. Instead of choosing the weekly crime maps link from the middle of the page choose the Police Blotter link from the left nav bar.

I actually live in the so called "bad" area of town. Like the others said it really depends, If your smart & use common sense you should be fine. I also agree with the previous poster that the majority of the violent crime that occurs here involves people who know each other.

I hope this helps.

Kelly

I do agree with previous posts... there's a bit of crime everywhere unfortunately, and it really comes down to being aware of your surroundings. I stopped going to a local health club in the evening (though I loved that aerobics class) because the parking lot was so dark. Can't make a quick exit when you can't even see where the keyhole is. And when I walked by myself I took my dog. When I went to the grocery store by myself in the evening (gets dark fast in the winter like a lot of places) I just parked close by the light and locked my doors when I got back in and left right away. I think too many women sit around fiddling with their purse and stuff. After being stalked in college (another state) you learn a few things.

I really didn't feel unsafe either, just took precautions. There is so much that is terrific about the Springs and I would move back if we ever needed to. There are so many beautiful parks (and I mean no matter where you are you are close to maybe half a dozen) and trails to get outdoors and enjoy things. Right by my house I could walk to a paved trail which people biked and roller bladed and walked on. I think it's one of the healthiest cities to live in (exercise wise, eating, and clean air) and I was always proud of that.

I was sad to hear about the shootings at the churches though. I had a neighbor who attended the New Life church, and that building was in the area of town I lived in. Just so sad. It was a good thing that security guard was there and armed.

And please, locate machine gun nests at about every 100 yards or so (complete with night vision equipment!)...that would end the influx immediately. But shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, don't tell anyone that, no one wants to hear it!

On the LA/Cal forums, this topic was so intense the mods will move any mention of it to an immigration forum and off the la or cal forums.

I live in the South end like everyone describes. We did have a guy murdered in our parking lot in March. Iti s scary i hear gun shots. I lived here for 12 years. When i was in a small trailor park on the outskirts of town, it was okay. When i first moved here I was on the southeast portion of town. that was a bad area. Its gotten much much worse. gangs have influxed and the gang activity has gotten ridiculous. Another problem we have is all the soldiers with PTSD commiting violence and murder. This has gone down this past year since it gained national attention. While I respect their sacrifice, a lot of these soldiers are hard to get along with. I lived by some young ones that were absoultely horrible. They were threatening me, bragging about being snipers in IRaq etc... Thats not to say all soldiers behave this way. Also working with them is very difficult. They have a tendancy to blow up or get violent. That being said, I agree with wht other have said the North end is nice. It is very full of Christians . The people do seem a little bit wealthier and hoity toity up there, but there nice. whatever you do avoid the SOUTH EAST side. the SOUTH end isnt bad depending on where you go. Avoid B street. Go more towards the broadmoor. also avoid the SOUTHGATE neighborhood. AND on the southeast side avoid the CHELTON, FOUNTAIN, S CIRCLE, BIJOU, PIKES PEAK , MURRAY area. that is where almost all of the shootings and gang activity take place.

Regarding crime in COS a few of my observations:

If you don't sell or use drugs your chances of being a victim of random crime are quite low

Due the the large DOD population the cops and robbers are both real good at what they do so when things go down its usually pretty deadly

El Paso County Sheriff is a absolute top notch agency they are firm but fair, they treat everyone with respect that said if people want to resist them you will be smacked down quicker than you can blink.

CSPD I have a mixed review of them some bad eggs some real good ones as an agency they seem traffic motivated as opposed to EPSO being more community oriented
