Unfortunately, all of the public schools have a ton of testing. They just do. However, I don't feel like the teachers at our school have been "teaching to the test."
At TdVA, each of my kids (2nd and 3rd grade) gets a several worksheet homework packet each week. They could do one sheet a night and get it done on time, though I try to have them do a couple each day of the weekend so they have less during the busy nights of the next week. I have strong feelings against homework in the early grades, especially K and 1, but I don't feel like this is too onerous. My 3rd grader also has four book reports through the year, though his teacher and I both agree that book reports tend to instill a hatred of books.
We have an understanding about the effort he puts into those...

My Wife and I bought a home in Woodmen Hills last year. It is on the golf course. It Is a ranch with a finished basement. The heating bill and cooling costs are not high at all. It is quite quiet and we find the wind refreshing. Open spaces, larger lots, lower sales tax. All these amenities proved to us that it beat living in a tighter community with higher costs and taxes.
