I need to replace my wired in smoke alarms. The fire department said an electrician is not needed, just a regular handyman. And recommendations?

My husband just replaced our wired smoke alarms himself about a month or two ago. (The ones on our 20 year old house starting going off for no reason). It was not too difficult - I think if you are even slightly handy at stuff you can do it. We bought these ones: FireX Hardwired interconnectable 120-Volt Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup-21007915 at The Home Depot

Buy the kind that has CO detector built in too and just runs off a battery and forget the wired connection.

I opted to keep my wired ones because they are interconnected so that if one goes off, they all do. I also made sure to get the dual sensor ones (photoelectric and ionization) that detect both fast flame fires and smoldering fires. I did not get CO detectors though - still have my plug in the outlet kind.

Exactly the same here.

Getting back to the original question.... I've been thinking I also need to find a handyman to help with projects like replacing the storm door, maybe hanging some wall cabinets in the laundry room, etc. Any suggestions? I'm in the SW area.

Pheteroi - Check w/your real estate agent who sold you your place when you moved here. They all keep a "sweet list" of folks who do home repairs. If you call one of them, make sure you tell them you were referred by your agent, as they should go the extra mile to stay on those agents' lists.
