Hi all,

Is there any place at the Springs airport (or alternatively maybe at the Air Force Academy) that a civilian can watch planes take off and land? I know there's a wayside along I-25 near the Academy but that seems to be closed. I also read a post from several years ago that mentioned a place to watch planes near the runway at the Academy but I drove in to the Academy one day and it looks like civilians aren't allowed there or anywhere else near the runway, and I'd really like to watch the commercial airliners at the airport rather than the small planes at the Academy anyway. Does the Springs airport have an observation area anywhere?

Thanks!

The wayside near the Academy has just been built and isn't ready to be open yet.

Can't help you with your main question, though.

The Sky View Sports Complex off of Powers and Milton Proby is a good spot. I have played softball with Parks and Rec at that complex and you see a lot of planes close up taking off and landing. It's right next to the airport. It's not on airport property, though, so you may not be as close as you'd like.

Call the airport (719) 550-1900 and ask administration. They might give you more information.

I read from other airplane enthusiasts that the little dirt lot on the corner of Airport Road and Stewart Avenue was a good place to plane spot as it is right by the approach of 17R and 13 and it is a deserted area. However after going to the area I quickly learned from military police from Peterson Air Force Base that the area is forbidden to civilians and you can be charged with trespassing.

Don't forget May 28th is Air Force Academy graduation and the Thunderbirds will be performing. Web site says approx 1pm.

They've been known to practice a few days before. Last year they flew over downtown the day after the show, and people reported seeing them in the mountains as well. Pretty cool.

Years ago, when they were performing, a stealth bomber flew over my house. Pretty weird to see that out over Black Forest.
