I am looking to apply for a job at Peterson AFB, but want to know where is the closest mountain community? I currently live in the sanberndino mountains Cali, about 45 miles from my work now.

Woodland Park, about the same 45 minute drive you're used to.

Go west of Peterson AFB about 10 miles to live in Manitou Springs which sits as the base of Pikes Peak and is hilly like San Francisco. Go another five miles west on Hwy 24, up Ute Pass, and take your pick of tiny towns and the town of Woodland Park.

If you can even find something, Manitou is expensive. I would second Woodland Park. You could also look into Cripple Creek, Florissant, Divide, etc. They are cheap but they are very small towns. Still will take you 45-60 minutes to get in but if you like that sort of thing, you may not mind.

It depends what you're looking for in Manitou as to how expensive it is. I recently moved there and was shocked at how much less the rents were than what I was expecting to pay.
