We have picked a target date for our relocation of March 28th. That would be the day we load the truck. If we use Uhaul we would park the truck and leave the next morning, or if we use a service they would head out as soon as we are loaded, and we would probley leave that afternoon or the following morning. Right now we are not 100% sure on the method we are going to use, the costs are very different. But we would be coming one of two ways, with children and a dog in tow...

1 uhaul towing a car, and two other cars driving

or

Moving Service taking the load
3 cars driving

At that time of year, what is an advisable route, where might we encounter weather challenges if any? Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Mary,

I would suggest taking the 40 to New Mexico and then head north on 25. The weather can be pretty bad in March over the mountains on I-70. Be careful of the high winds coming across 40 and up 25.

Good luck!

I moved from San Diego to COS several years ago and we drove in January. We went the southern route through New Mexico. We hit a little snow through New Mexican, I think it was passed Santa Fe.

Default Take the southern route!

I agree with previous posters. Don't attempt the route through Utah and then over the rockies on I-70. It will be hairy for the moving truck to say the least! We did the move from So Cal to Colorado Springs taking the route through Vegas, then I-15 through Utah and then I-70 and then I-25 south and it was hard, and that was middle of June with no snow. The poor moving truck went SOOO slowly over those mountains.

Go through New Mexico and come up I-25 North. This is called the southern route. It will be a lot of desert but hopefully better weather for you guys.

We also did the rental truck move from San Diego to COS. I also would recommend the southern route. I-70 can be very difficult due to altitude and spring weather. It's a much easier drive along I40. I don't think trucks are allowed accross the dam, so you'll have to go south to pick up I40. A little longer, but well worth it. Good luck.
