Probably is IF you have an active TS clearance and work as a gov't contractor.

Others, not so much.

This.

I just browsed through the first 5 pages of the general career job posting board and have been to a couple of STEM UCCS career fairs and have yet to be impressed, so to think that CO Springs is leading the nation here or something.

The article said they based it on STEM job concentration and the unemployment rate and median rent. CO Springs would have good numbers, but unpacking it, it's T, specifically IT security and some electrical engineering (which there happens to be a whole lot of). The SEM is pretty lacking and a couple of math major friends being as disappointed with the STEM career fair as I was as an Econ/Stats student.

AND, I have seen a whole swath of job postings ask of TS Clearance for an entry level position. What normal college grad has this? So there may be postings, but they are asking for weird things and aren't interested in true entry level hirees.

CO Springs just has a very 1 dimensional market.

Those math majors should consider teaching - very high demand for qualified math teachers.

I'd agree government clearances significantly help the situation, and next to healthcare, are probably the fastest growing and best paying jobs in the area, but I wouldn't say we are only tech focused. Especially if you lived here in the late '80s early '90s when we were really tech focused. We still have a fair amount of engineering jobs around here, however they aren't sitting around unfilled for months on end. Competition for them is somewhat intense.

Totally agree. North Middle School went through the whole school year (unless something changed second semester) needing a math teacher- job on the website all year long.

I know several people who own businesses that are in desperate need of quality software engineers. These are start-ups, not government contractors. I don't know a ton of people in town, so my sample size is small. But those who think there aren't STEM related jobs here are wrong. There is a shortage of quality talent more than jobs.

The pay is so low here however . My husband commutes to South Tech because of it.
