I know this isn't a gardening or lawn care forum, but last year, I had a heck of a problem with lawn fungus and I noticed that several of my neighbors lawns had the same issues. What looks like dog pee stains in the grass, ends up spreading all over.

I'm thinking it's because my lawn has a lot of thatch underneath.

I didn't have the lawn aerated last year, as I had just moved here and didn't know what the norms are for the area.

For Coloradans that have been here a while, do you have the lawn core aerated?

I have an inground sprinkler system, and don't want to replace all my sprinkler heads after aerating. Any good companies or service providers out there that you would recommend?

Most years I aerate the lawn. It helps, but it's by no means a cure-all. It also helps to dethatch your lawn, even if you do so yourself with an aggressive raking.

Most any of the local contractors who do this will do OK. There shouldn't be a need to replace your sprinkler heads, but you'll want to buy a set of flags and mark the location of all the sprinklers rather than trust the contractor to find them.

Another (cheaper) alternative is to get together with a couple neighbors, split the cost, and rent an aerator. You can get one at Lowe's or Home Depot.

This is an excellent idea plus it is fun. I plan on doing it soon when the ground is softer.

My lawn is aerated twice a year - once in the springs and again in the fall. In 2002 because it was done, it was able to withstand a major fungus that went through my neighborhood. Four houses had to resod.

Gary's Lawn Service is very reasonable and they will tell you want you need and will treat for fungus if you have it - they are coming to my house in April. 217-0674 is the number I think. If not, look it up on DexOnline.

As for the sprinklers, you can go get little tiny flags from Lowes or Home Depot to mark the sprinklers and they will avoid them. In the almost ten years I have been here, they haven't broken one yet.
