Our scout troop was supposed to go on their high adventure camp in New Mexico and were scheduled to leave this Friday the 9th. Unfortunately, the trip has been cancelled due to wildfires. They have their airline tickets to fly into Denver. Is it possible to rent camping gear and find a place where they can still camp and have some adventures? Any local troops who could help or anyone with ideas. They are desperate at this point and if nothing can transpire, it will have to be called off. I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts! We are in Indiana by the way, so don't know much about this area. Thank you!!!

One thing you want to make sure of is that you check for fire restrictions wherever you go by contacting the local national forest ranger district office. Many national forest areas in Colorado are now under stage 1 or 2 fire restrictions if not outright bans. VERY dry in a lot of areas in Colorado right now. Good luck!

It might take a little research, but there are possibilities. A few links you might want to look at:

Were you going to be heading south to NM for your adventure? There are lots of campgrounds in Pike National Forest close in to Colorado Springs. If you give us a few more details about how you were getting from Denver to NM, it could make it easier to come up with suggestions.
For instance, this is down near the NM border - there's a nice campground and lake - it would be a little drive, but if you were planning on doing that anyway ...

Another one that hasn't been mentioned is Camp Alexander. I grew up in Colorado Springs from '57-64, was a scout, and went up there for three years in a row. Loved it! It's located just outside of Lake George. Lake George is 39 miles west of Colorado Springs on U.S. Hwy. 24.
