"When the class of 2020 graduates from the Air Force Academy on April 18, cadets will get to toss their hats amid the roar of F-16 fighter jets.

The academy, which moved up the graduation by six weeks amid coronavirus, announced Friday that the Air Force Thunderbirds will fly over the graduation ceremony, which is still being planned.

The Thunderbirds have flown over the graduation for generations and only missed one of the ceremonies in the past decade amid budget constraints.

The fly-over is timed so that cadets toss their caps as the jets fly in.

How that will work with social distancing that's designed to slow the spread of coronavirus has yet to be announced.

Last month, the academy sent juniors, sophomores, and freshmen home. The seniors remained on campus in solitary isolation in the dormitories.

After a pair of suicides, the school this week announced it will send the seniors off to the Air Force and Space Force early.

It's the first time an American military academy has graduated a class ahead of schedule since World War II."

Based on what we saw this week, it will just be a hat toss flyover and then they are gone(maybe another pass or two). Thunderbirds were in town on Wednesday for practice. They flew from Nevada to COS, did a couple flyovers and then left. Never landed in the Springs. They also flew over the dorm area, not the stadium. With the dorms being farther back, harder for spectators to see, which can help reduce people gathering to watch.

Thunderbirds to honor Air Force graduates, first responders in series of flyovers across Colorado

"The Air Force Thunderbirds will honor Colorado’s healthcare workers, first responders and military members with a series of Colorado flyovers following the Air Force Academy’s graduation flyover this weekend.

A formation of eight F-16 Fighting Falcons out of Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada will salute the graduates before flying over a number of Colorado cities along the Front Range this Saturday.

The Thunderbirds’ flight path will bring them over Greeley, Windsor, Fort Collins, Loveland, Longmont, Boulder, the Denver metro area, Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Fort Carson and Pueblo.

The details of the flight path should be released sometime Friday. Flyovers will start at approximately 12:50 MDT and last 60 minutes.

“The Thunderbirds are thrilled to continue on a tradition of culminating the Air Force Academy graduation and welcoming our newest second lieutenants into our Air Force,” said Lt. Col. John Caldwell, Thunderbirds commander and leader in a news release Thursday.

“While the coronavirus pandemic has curtailed many of the celebrations that graduating cadets usually enjoy, we are proud to provide this one defining moment for these young American’s lives as they become officers in the world’s greatest Air Force.” "

Based on the flight plan a lot of people were up north by the Academy to see them come back south about 1:45p- at 3p they finally flew by the far eastern side of C/S then over downtown.

Troopers had the usual problem of keeping people from stopping on I-25 to watch or from stopping on the on/off ramps.
