Hello all.. I have recently moved to Colorado Springs from North Carolina. I am looking for a summer volunteer program for my 14 year old son and am finding it very hard. I would like for it to be some type of outdoor activity around the Security/Widefield area but am open to any ideals. If anyone has any tips or ideals I would welcome the comments. Thanks...

I recently saw an ad that they are looking for volunteers for North Cheyenne Canyon. Not sure what ages or types of jobs they have. Not in Widefield, but not super far away. If you are interested, call the Starsmore Discovery Center and see if they can give you any details.

The only volunteer things I know of in our area is the Live Well Organization up by Fountain Fire Station 2. It is an organization that promotes organic gardening and supporting the Earth. They have planted/are planting a garden next to the station and needs regular upkeep. The fruits and vegetables that it produces is available and free for anyone in the community.
Speaking of fire, I will have to double check, but he might be able to try the fire explorer program too.
We have occasionally volunteered/visited the Beehive Homes (assisted living/nursing homes).
During the school year, I have taken my daughter and anyone else in her class who is interested outside to do a trash pick-up in our community. Since Fountain schools have early release on Thursdays, I usually used the time to gather kids and we would clean areas in town that were littered. I coordinated with the city so all we had to do was pile our trash bags in a designated spot and they would come by and pick it up and take it to the dump for us.
The Security Public Library/Widefield Community Center might have other ideas options too.
I know the Abrams librarian is trying to categorize her books for AR levels and could really use some help.
I am plum out of ideas...

Those are really great ideas!

I'm not sure how the volunteer thing works but, maybe there is a way to find out if any "Habitat For Humanity" homes are being built.

I do know it is all volunteer with the new homeowners putting in a certain amount of hours.

Is that like "explorer scouts" or something?
