My wife, 2 kids, and I are relocating to Colorado Springs at the end of summer from Louisville, KY. We're moving because my ex-wife's husband received orders from the military to relocate to Fort Carson. We share a daughter together hence why I have to move. They're either staying in base or moving somewhere relatively close to it. I grew up in Mission Viejo, CA (Orange County) and currently living in the nicest part of Louisville. I work from home so no need to factor in commuting. The goal is to maintain the same or better living environment without venturing too far off base (within 15min freeway drive). We're looking for newer apartments or rental homes close to shops and entertainment.

Also - any suggestions on good schools for a first grader and a pre-schooler?

Do a quick search and you will find others who have asked about the same thing - good living areas with short commute to Ft. Carson. Lots of info available!

Here are a couple thread links:

In my opinion, the nicest area that is very close to Ft. Carson, low crime, good schools (D12), and not the most expensive, is Broadmoor Bluffs. You can go up I-25 from Ft. Carson further and have huge selections of places from Manitou Springs (D12?), Old Colorado City (Garden of the Gods area), Rockrimmon, and Briargate (D20). The furthest away would be Briargate and a 20 minute highway drive.

Broadmoor Bluffs is suburb with suburb shops between the ritzy old Broadmoor area and Cheyenne Mountain area.
Manitou Springs is a hip community with lots of old stores and restaurants nestled in the start of the valley leading to Woodland Park.
Garden of the Gods area has rental homes tucked in the beautiful scenery of red rock outcroppings.
Briargate is suburb with the newer shops, restaurants, and entertainment areas.
Rockrimmon is a hilly suburb type area with trees up close to the mountains.
