I'm moving from out of state and am wondering what kind of fee's and taxes there are for owning a vehicle in CO. I'm living in TX right now and it's very cheap just a $60/yr. registration fee and a $40/ inspection. I have heard that there can be taxes in other states that TX doesn't have. I've never lived in another state so i'm kind cluesless when it comes to this? Can any enlighten me on this topic?

When we moved here, to EL Paso County / Colorado Springs, we had to register our cars. This act included having to pay, on the spot, the personal property taxes on the 'value' of the two cars.

For tax year 2006, we paid $320.00 ppty tax on our two cars, a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2004 Camry. If we were just moving here today, we'd pay about that much to get registered, plus tags. Insurance is required and take the proof of insurance with you to the DMV. Before going to the DMV, stop by most any quick lube place or dealer and have them issue a 'proof of VIN' form to you, costs about $10 per vehicle. Take that with you to DMV too, along with the current registration card, and if you have clear title, I'd take the title with me too. Took us less than an hour at the DMV.

See: http://car.elpasoco.com/MotorVehicle/Pages/default.aspx for exact requirements.

I recently moved from TX to CO. In TX, my yearly registration fees were about $60-$65. When I registered my car in CO I paid about $150. I believe they base it on the weight and year of your vehicle. I have an 01 Nissan Pathfinder. Hope this gives you an idea.

I have lived here all my life and my 1993 Honda Accord (she's old but she's still kicking) is about $25 per year. It will be less next year I am sure but hopefully that helps you out a bit.

Not totally sure about new registrations with vehicles from out of state but I would think it might be higher so they can do a title search.

Default Martha

I just bought a 2005 Toyota Camry in Denver approx 3 weeks ago. I was wanting to know an estimate on the license and also how much the Denver Bronco plates will be? I live in Falcon.

Looks like you have to have permission from the Broncos in order to get one of their plates and make a donation of at least $30 :

Colorado Department of Revenue

The Denver Broncos Charities license plate was created with House Bill 06-1339. Plates are issued to passenger cars, trucks that do not exceed sixteen thousand pounds empty weight, noncommercial or recreational vehicles and motorcycles. Denver Broncos Charities plates may only be issued to individuals that have been authorized by the Denver Broncos Charities Organization. A certificate will be issued to each authorized individual that is valid for one set of Broncos Charities plates. Individual may contact the Denver Broncos Charities at DenverBroncos.com – Official Website Of The Denver Broncos or (720)258-3366 to inquire about the issuance of an authorization certificate.

Does this mean I'd pay taxes on my car and van one time when I first register them in CO or is this a yearly thing? We're temporarily in TX and still registered in CA where we bought both vehicles. Thanks!

Yes, when you first register them. If you are military, there may be an exclusion for you. See this recent thread:
