In the past couple of days I noticed a new 3% tax on food in zip 80911. When and how did this come into effect? RP

No, it was snack food items. I thought food was not taxed in El Paso county. RP

Statewide starting May 1 there is a tax on soda and candy that is equivilant to the state sales tax portion (somewhere between 2 - 3 percent). The rationale was that these items (and all food in general) are subject to the state sales tax but they are currently 'exempt'. Removing the exemption is different from raising or starting a new tax in their minds so there you have the new sugary food/drink tax that came about without a vote.

Your elected representatives made and passed a bill to do this - it was big in the news several months back.

Great. Once more reason to become an ex-pat and move to Thailand!

Sounds like more of a reason to eat less junk food to me.

I could support a prohibitive tax on tube tops.

That's is funny. I could get behind that too.

I just think more and more taxes are not necessarily a good thing. Income tax, sales tax, property tax, gas tax, storm water tax, and now an additional tax on a bag of chips and a coke?

For single folks like me, we get raked over the coals on income taxes as it is.
Maybe I should adopt some kids for deductions.
