A real problem in many Colorado communities is the sad shape of local, county, and state budgets for law enforcement. Many places are grossly understaffed in law enforcement--that means fewer patrols, lack of follow-up investigation of crimes, lack of equipment and supplies, low pay scales, high employee turnover and all kinds of other issues. With Colorado's now extremely festering budget problems, those issues are only going to get worse. It's no surprise that many Coloradans--especially those living in far-flung rural areas--are arming themselves for personal protection. When a criminal is one minute from breaking into your home and the nearest law enforcement may be 20 minutes or longer getting there, "self-protection" becomes the watchword. I would not own an isolated home anywhere in rural Colorado now (and I used to live alone in rural Colorado a couple of miles from the nearest neighbor) unless I knew that someone was there 24/7, 365 days a year. An unoccupied property is an absolute theft magnet, even when it's behind locked gates--especially since the typical rural sheriff's deputy in Colorado is usually tasked with patrolling several hundred square miles of territory by himself or herself these days.
