Well Friday has come and gone and the St Cloud Hotel has lived to see another day. It seems like the owners were floating that unreasonable rumor (demolition on Friday) to try to drum up some financial support from the community.

Their ploy may backfire as they pissed a lot of people off for creating this hysteria.

The St Cloud is still at risk, but I don't think this community will let it be lost. As for the owners... shame, shame, shame.

If a building is known to have asbestos, it must be remediated before demolition so the dust doesn't escape to the community.

Where do they have the hotel advertised for sale? Didn't see it on a quick Zillow search.

According to the newspaper someone wants to buy the hotel and turn it into a home for single mothers. Seriously? Are there that many single mothers in that small town? Of course maybe they are women waiting for their men to do time at the local prisons. Either way a very depressing thought.

Downtown Canon City could be such a jewel but the locals just seem to not understand what they have.

Well, I'm a local... but I'd have to agree with you. The powers that be in this town just seem bent on self-destruction and most (not all) but most of the community seems to be complacent.

I've always said that Canon City has so much potential. It just lacks the human component to unlock that potential.

The recreational opportunities near by could support a thriving small town downtown.
But maybe the human component is too invested in the local prison industry.

Sorry to dampen your enthusiasm, but I don't think you dodged a bullet yet. A building like that would take about six months to demolish. Maybe a year if they have to remove asbestos first. It wouldn't happen in one day.

Worse yet if the owners are not into preserving the building, they could just damage it, and in the course of a few years, let it fall down. Once its unsafe the city would be forced to condemn it, and order it torn down immediately. This happens a lot.

I hope new owners can be found for it soon.

I hope it doesn't get torn down! It is an amazing build and one of the better looking and historic buildings in that town. Maybe it's because my home town has two empty decaying open atrium (like the brown palace in Denver except smaller and slightly older) hotels that I feel that the St Cloud Hotel can be saved or preserved.
