In preparation for our move to Durango this year, I'm researching insurance companies. Living in PA as I have all my life, I have always used Erie Insurance rather than any of the large national companies. Been with them since 1971. They have always provided excellent service for home & auto having needed that insurance protection a few times over the years. Unfortunately, they don't service Colorado so a change will be necessary.

I'm looking for similar type of insurance company in the west for home & auto. I don't want a large national company but prefer instead to find a statewide or regional company who is known for good service.

Any suggestions regarding companies to consider (or not) for my home & auto insurance needs?

Pick AMICA.
You won't find local companies.
This is not the East.

Local companies? Like Barney's Insurance? Nope. I have State Farm, a LOCAL agent from here in town. Since he's from here, has ties here, he's not about to screw anyone. I think that's what you need to look for. Ask the locals who they have.

OK, so I'll rephrase the question I guess:

Does anybody on the board have any experience with any regional or local (i.e., non national companies for insurance).

Example: American Family Insurance Co - operates in 19 states including CO, has a claims center in Denver Insurance Agent and Office Locations | American Family Insurance

Even Farmers Insurance who although quite large, only operates in 41 states, not all 50.

I have seen some less than pleasant dealings between relatives and a few of the large national companies on both rates & claims over the years and having always been insured by a smaller company (they operate in about a dozen states), I have never experienced anything but the absolute best service & rates in all of my years of coverage with them.

Just wanted to check & see what other's experiences may be (if any) before obtaining quotes from anybody. Agents just want to sell insurance, that's their job. So if anybody out there has insurance that's not with one of the big guys, but a smaller or medium sized company, I'd love to hear about it, both good & bad.

If not, I'll head a different direction.

Thanks
