Nah. My thoughts on the matter are linkless!. For me anyway, it has nothing to do with assumption. I have no idea what the winter holds in store. A thought that we might have a snowy winter simply passed thru my mind and I made a post ( #243 ) to that effect.

A lot of this is just the modern version of folks sitting around and talking about the weather and making guesses, BSing and having a good time. 6-8 months from now, once we have seen what this winter brought, it will probably be forgotten (except by those who guessed right and want to remind everyone else that they were wrong).

I've been keeping my pika in a Igloo type chiller box all summer - like intensive care for pikas. Now, on top of everything else, it will be COLDER in January? Will my pika make it through yet another oncoming climatic assault?

There have been some good solid rains for the last two weeks in the San Luis Valley.

The difference is notable. From what before a landscape looking rather brown, parched and dry, now green. Not only the fields, but even largely barren hillsides which customarily seem naturally content in harsh shades of brown and rock, even they are covered in mists of green, more like western Oregon. Not to mention the forests, which at last have some reprieve.

In the town of South Fork one wouldn't even know that the West Fork Complex Fire had come close to wiping it out this summer. There are some significant fire scars on the mountainsides near town, but from recent wildfires of years past. If the wildfire this summer burned close to town, still not visible from there.

The more obvious sign flows past within the Rio Grande River. It is largely opaque and the color of dark chocolate, evidently heavily influenced due the Papoose Fire west of Creede, and along its watershed. Unaccountably, the level of the river is also high at the moment, near flood stage. With earlier this spring the river level being well down and below normal. This could be in part artificial, perhaps a greater release for some reason upriver from the Rio Grande Reservoir. Although the local feeling that the recent rains have influenced the rise in the river.

All in all most welcome, in an area of the state that definitely needed the precipitation. Also, perhaps not coincidentally, water rules are being tightened, new taxes on it imposed. Word has it that the many businesses relying on tourism saw their critical July receipts down by half.

Yet at the moment the land green and verdant, and lovely.
