This collision between some monsoonal moisture and a cold front may likely be the last summer monsoonal episode for 2013. Seldom does the Southwest Monsoon last much beyond the last week of September (though there have been some exceptions). Typically, October and November are pretty dry, with the exception of a few Pacific storms that may make it into the region. By November, Pacific storms, though usually not with a huge amount of moisture, will start affecting Colorado, especially the northwestern mountains.

It remains to be seen what this winter snowpack season will hold for the region. There is not much correlation between how active the Southwest Monsoon is during summer and what the winter snowpack season looks like. Even with the recent very heavy rains and flooding, much of Colorado remains locked in a long-term hydrological drought that only wet winters (and probably several in a row) will end.

A powerful weather system from southern Nevada will interact with monsoonal moisture from Arizona. The combination of these two features brings frequent showers with embedded thunderstorms. Some storms will be strong, possibly severe, with hail and strong wind gusts. Also, heavy rain showers may cause flash flooding, mud debris flows, and rockslides in steep terrain. The flash flooding risk is elevated across Montezuma and La Plata county of southwest Colorado. Later tonight, snow levels will lower to around 9500 feet and will bring light accumulations of snow for slushy conditions over the mountain passes.

Weather Spotters have been activated in western Colorado. This is supposed to be a pretty powerful system today.

Hey gang, I'm thinking to close this thread about 01 Oct and start up the annual winter thread at that time.

The next few days may bring the last gasp of summer, and a nasty one it's been with fires and floods.

The big dark rain/thunderstorm clouds sitting over Boulder right now heading east would like to have a word with you.

Big dark clouds here too, and rain, and 48 degrees. Some flooding on HWY 145 near Placerville and snow south of Ouray.

Rather than dealing with all of the construction delays along US 50, I drove back to GJ from a successful hike to the summit of Mt Shavano near Salida, thru Buena Vista, then west on Colorado 82 over Independence Pass to I-70 in Glenwood Springs. It rained quite hard the entire drive from Aspen to Grand Junction. BTW, Mt Shavano was my first ever ( and probably my last! ) hike to the summit of a 14er. It took me 64 years to get around to doing that. I can finally cross the 14er thing off my bucket list.

Durango is under a Flood Warning all night. Rain/Snow in Ouray County, and I've had so far at 10pm 3/4" rain here. I've seen a CDot snow plow up and down 550 and 62 tonight too. Welcome to fall.

A storm system departs the region this morning, bringing an end to the rain showers and light snow above 9000 feet this morning. Sunshine from Utah will spread across western Colorado late this morning and afternoon. Frosty conditions are expected tonight across some of the higher elevated valleys, and a season ending killing freeze is expected at Craig and Gunnison. The next weather system brings gusty afternoon winds on Wednesday followed by cooler and unsettled conditions Thursday and Friday.

What has become of Colorado, that we need to import sunshine from Utah?
