Hi

My husband just got a job in Vail and I was wondering if anyone could tell me about housing, where to live, etc. We can afford about $2000 in rent (I know that is low) so I don't know where that puts us? I would like Minturn I think but you never know what a place is really like until you are there

Also have 2 kids so I am concerned about that. Are the schools known to be good?
I will have one kid in elementary and one in Middle school. I would love to be close to the schools and not jump on I-70 to get there!

And for the record I am coming from another Colorado mountain town so I get harsh weather etc. I just don't know Vail area well. I know Boukder may not be the best forum but since it didn't give me a Rockies section

Thankful for your help!

You can ask the Mod, Mike from Back East, to move you to the general forum to get more responses.

$2,000 is too low for Vail, possibly something in East Vail which may allow your husband to use the free bus system rather than deal with parking in the Village. I have a love-hate relationship with Minturn, it's a cute little town, very walkable and by the river. In the winter it doesn't get a lot of sun and can be really ice packed, in the summer they have a great farmer's market on Saturday but it brings a ton of traffic to the town and can take 20-30 minutes to get into town from the exit. You can also take a look at Eagle-Vail, Avon, Edwards all within easy commuting distance to Vail. Eagle is a nice family community, but about a 30 minute drive to the Village.

I can't help on schools, I know one of our schools has gotten grant from the Gates Foundation.

The paper, www.vaildaily and craigslist: high rockies classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events are the best places to find rentals. Please feel free to ask any area specific questions, I'm happy to try to help.

Moved...

TIP: If anyone is unsure which forum to use, just first do a search on the name of the town or topic and see what forum similar threads are in.

You may find a rental available through one of the many property management companies in the Vail area, so I'd start calling them. Most likely at your price point to find down-valley housing, although vacanicies in mid-season will be rather slim pickings ... many of the places targeted to employee housing are leased out for the season in Sept/Oct each year for the ski season months, if not an annual lease.

Your only real bet is to try and rent something in the spring when all the snowbirds leave and there are ample, reasonable rentals. If you look now your $2,000 would likely get you a studio or dumpy 1 bedroom somewhere.

My advice is to look "Down Valley" somewhere like Avon, Edwards or Eagle where rents are more reasonable and you'll get twice the house/apartment for your money.

Also, save up.....Vail is one of the priciest place to live in the U.S.
