I'm in the same situation. I have electric baseboard heaters and my bill last month was $$543! At current prices, propane is also ruinous. There is no likelyhood that natural gas will come out in our way in the forseeable future. At $500+ a month, I can recover the costs of solar in just a few years. It seems like the only practical choice.

In theory, it could be done. Compressed natural gas (cng) has less than half the energy density of propane, and requires tanks able to handle 20 times the pressure.

Given the volume and pressures, it is not likely that any equivalent to the propane delivery trucks will be cruising our neighborhoods soon. The cost of delivery would be huge compared to propane. However, there are cng retail outlets for vehicles showing up around the country. Clean Energy has a location in Colorado Springs and their website claims the current price (2/14/14) is about equivalent to $2.00/gal for propane.

So, in theory, you could get the necessary tanks fitted onto a truck, get the appropriate tank for home use, get the necessary fittings to make the transfer, and make a trip every week or two to fill the tanks. It would be surprising if there were not licensing and permits required as you could blow up an entire neighborhood.

Ok, sounds like the natural gas route isn't going to happen.

The house has baseboard electric, which is terrible except for the fact that we can
control the zones effectively.

Does anyone reading this have any experience with the Honeywell wireless T-stat and Redlink?

We will be retrofitting all the baseboard units soon with some type of system like this.

Thanks.
