There was an item in the news being apropos to this discussion: one reason for the current shortage of propane and subsequent higher prices is because a good deal of it is being exported from the United States. In ships. Other factors are obviously at play, such as transportation bottlenecks, but whether Colorado or elsewhere one's retail price reflects its value on the global market.

Something to keep in mind when oil companies begin waving the American flag when asking for favors. Whether oil or gas fracked, or transported across America's heartland via the Keystone XL pipeline (in either case to potential environmental harm here), the intended market is to the highest bidder.

A relative of mine in the oil business once explained this to me perfectly succinctly when I asked about the seemingly odd vagaries of gasoline prices. He replied that the price paid reflected what the market would bear, and just as much as they could charge. All BS aside, that is the bottom line.
