I hope all our Western Slope regulars are safe and my thoughts and prayers go out to those who lost loved ones in this. I understand this is one of the largest mudslides in recent history of the state.

I know, it breaks my heart....I can not imagine that this thing is 4 miles long...
250 FEET deep in some places.
I am in shock and awe over this.
What did they report... it is 4000 football fields....

I heard about this on NPR the other day. I used to live in Grand Junction and worked for the Grand Mesa National Forest, so I spent a lot of time near Collbran. Very tragic! It's quite shocking at just how big that slide was too. My heart goes out to the families who lost a loved one.

Wow, that's a chunk of the Mesa sliding off! I feel terrible for the families of the missing people. As advanced as our society gets it's incredibly humbling realizing that we still have no control over nature. The world is an unpredictable place, seeing massive geological change happen in our backyard is indescribable.

I wonder what that would have sounded like when it happened and as it was sliding down the mountain.

You wouldn't have had very long to wonder. The slide produced a mag. 2.8 earthquake and the USGS estimates that at its peak the landslide was traveling roughly 170mph.

That doesn't surprise me at all. I'm sure it was a deafening rumble to say the least. I'm sure it could be heard miles away to the left and right of the affected area.

Best set of pix yet for the mudslide.
PHOTOS: Grand Mesa mudslide miles wide, 3 still missing

I believe this link will show the location of photo 1 in the Denver Post link above. There appears to be fracking sites all over the area and if one wished to speculate it's an easy jump to assume that fracking induced earthquakes triggered the slide.
